1939 — Today

Our History

The presence of the Free Evangelical Church in Heraklion is a journey of spiritual searching, faith, devotion, and trust in God that began in 1939 and continues to this day. This work was built through the desire of people in our city to know God and to live with the Word of God as their guide.

1939

The Beginning

The clock of time takes us back to the first decades of the 20th century, specifically to 1939. A small group, with a deep love for the Word of God, took the first steps toward establishing an evangelical community in Heraklion.

Within the social conditions of that time, which were not always favorable to such an effort, the group began meeting with a shared desire to study the Word of God, pray, and share in the fellowship of faith. Among the pioneers of this first group were Michael Makrogamvrakis and Dimitrios Semertzakis. Dimitrios Semertzakis made a room available in a property he owned behind the Heraklion Archaeological Museum so that the group could hold its gatherings there.

Sapoutie

The Official Beginning on Sapoutie Street

The first official gathering of our church took place in a space on Sapoutie Street. In this place, the first hymns were sung and the first sermons were preached, laying the foundations for the organized presence of the Free Evangelical Church in Heraklion.

Ikarou

The Years on Ikarou Street

As time passed, as the Lord added new people to the church and its spiritual needs grew, the community needed a new, more comfortable space for worship.

The church first moved to and operated for quite some time on Kantanoleontos Street and then moved to Ikarou Street, where it continued its journey under the spiritual care and guidance of Michael Makrogamvrakis. These years were decisive in shaping the life and identity of the church. It became a spiritual beacon in Heraklion, a refuge where many people found encouragement and were built up in the faith through prayer, study of the Holy Bible, and fellowship with other believers.

Today

Today

After a long and blessed journey, the Free Evangelical Church of Heraklion acquired its own permanent home. Today we are located in our own premises at 33 Rodon Street in Heraklion, Crete.

This place is more than a building; it is our spiritual home. It is the place where we gather as a spiritual family to worship God, hear and study His Word, pray, and support one another.

Looking ahead, we continue with the same desire: to remain faithful to the Word of God, to serve Jesus Christ, and to share the message of the Gospel with the community of Heraklion.
